Description: |
A large carved black stone example depicting a stylized bear, with birdlike front paws, crouching over a reclining humanoid figure with expressive facial features. Exposed ribs on both sides of the bear. Overall traditional Northwest coast decorative elements throughout the carving. Large carved opening on the center of the bears back, connected to a mouth piece through the butt end. Intact, overall exc. cond. A very rare and unusual example. This pipe is much larger than normal and was most likely carved for the commercial market, possibly by a non-native American. |
